Sterlen – Nobody

ME Blog, Music, Promo, Videos

Multitalented producer and artist Sterlen Roberts drops string of singles in advance of genre-breaking album to come in 2021

OAKLAND, CA – In a landscape that’s become stark and with many thirsting for an epiphany in the realm of sound, there are few who can truly match what musical artist Sterlen Roberts has accomplished. The son of Grammy-nominated Gospel writer and producer Steven Roberts, Sterlen has been stretching the realms of possibility within the music industry for many years. Long before Kanye West did it on his platinum-selling album “Jesus Walks,” Sterlen was sampling Choir and Gospel tracks against Hip Hop beats and smooth-flowing Raps in genre-breaking ways. He has continued that for the majority of his career and today, is offering a truly original body of work through a bevy of new singles and a forthcoming album in 2021.

Most recently, Sterlen released the single “Nobody” which is a fusion of Rap and R&B that will take listeners back to the days of early Mary J. Blige – with rapping on the front end of the song that cuts straight to R&B before seamlessly transitioning back to Rap.

“I love the vibe of the song because it’s really traditional R&B and it has that real good feel that comes with a great R&B song,” Sterlen said. “When you hear the hook, it feels like 90s R&B but with a modern-day flavor.”

Over the years, Sterlen hasn’t only been concentrating on his own craft. He has also diligently sought out other artists in his field knowing that to do so would expand his knowledge and experience. As a result, he’s been able to work with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Keyshia Cole, Flo-Rida, Luke James, Lyrica Anderson, Rico Love, Latoya London, JodeciFlava Flav, and many more. He also studied closely under Devante Swing of Jodeci in the same environment that nurtured artists such as Missy Elliot and Timbaland. All of that hard work has paid off and is reflected in the quality of the beats he produces – mixing classical piano with hard-hitting tempo and drums. He’s also become known as a rapper who knows how to rock a crowd, while also enlightening them with his piano performances.

“We have never seen an artist like Sterlen,” said the Oakland to Paris Music Group. “He is so talented. It’s almost as if he can do anything. He can perform. He’s an amazing piano player. He can rap, produce, write, and even direct his own music videos. He is that creative and gifted. We think he was in a zone on his most recent effort. It’s his most amazing work ever – from his intro ‘I Been on the Way,’ to even more radio-friendly songs such as ‘Nobody,’ he has mastered the gift of being creatively commercial.”

Sterlen said his new album in 2021 will be a profound mixture of Hip Hop, R&B and Soul, with splashes of Pop mixed in. Another single from the album perhaps best exemplifies this description. “Way Up” features Sterlen’s mastery of the piano against a Gospel-driven track that has a lot of urban flavor. It also shows off his skills as a rapper, among other things.

“There’s a B-3 organ in there,” Sterlen said. “There’s Gospel. There’s some auto-tune. And there’s me rapping, of course. I’m saying some real stuff. It’s a lot of creativeness all bunched into one song. It’s the perfect song to showcase me as a producer and artist. I think a lot of other producers will really get it. It could be church music, but it’s not. It’s something truly original.”

Roving Jewel – On Everything (feat. Substantial)

Blog, Industry Spotlight, ME Blog, Music, Promo

Notorious producer Roving Jewel collaborates withHip Hop legends on new album ‘The 38th Expansion’

SACRAMENTO, CA – Roving Jewel is a beatmaker, producer and multi-instrumentalist from Sacramento, California whose new album “The 38th Expansion” gives fans of Hip Hop a throwback flavor that’s reminiscent of the mid-90s and early 2000s. With production that’s drenched in gritty Boom-Bap, Soul, Jazz, World and Psychedelia, Roving Jewel has a unique sound and style that is lighting up the West Coast. He first caught attention with his instrumental project, “Auditory Hallucinations,” earlier this year and is now ready to follow that up with his full-length album “The 38th Expansion.”

The project is unique in that this well known industry-respected producer has partnered with 14 different artists to feature on each of the songs on the album. Artists include: Substantial, TEK (from Smif-N-Wessun), Killah Priest and Prodigal Sunn (from Sunz of Man), Casual (from Hieroglyphics), 9th Prince and Kinetic 9 (from Killarmy), Zion I, Planet Asia, C.O.N-Vers, The Shaaw Brothers, Andrew Lozano, Mother’s Milk, and El Conductor as the DJ on one of the tracks. Together, these notorious industry veterans help Roving Jewel create a sound that takes listeners back to the golden era of Hip Hop.

“These artists are a lot of heavy hitters from the mid-90s and early 2000s hip-hop,” Roving Jewel said. “I wanted some legendary emcees on there – people who had the kind of sound I grew up with. When I pitched the idea to them, they were down to work on the project. It’s something that we’ve crafted together over the past six to eight months. I’m 38 this year, which is a big part of the reason for the name. But that number is also an auspicious number in numerology. It represents a time of growth, creativity and expansion that’s usually marked by some sort of turmoil before growth. That’s a good metaphor of 2020 and what this year has brought for so many of us. So on this album, you’re going to hear a lot of things that reflect what we’re going through in present times – from civil rights to racial tension to police brutality and of course the pandemic. Ultimately, it’s an album that captures the mindset of how everyone is making it through it.”

The debut single from the project is a song called “On Everything” which features Substantial – known for his insightful lyrics and his work with acclaimed Japanese producer Nujabes known for his jazzy and soulful take on Hip Hop. Roving Jewel said the song definitely embraces that jazzy, soulful vibe as Substantial raps about what he’s facing as a black man in America right now and what he has to go through in his day-to-day life. It’s a song that he said not only demonstrates the individuality of each of the artists featured on the project, but also which sets the tone for the creativity and diversity of the entire album.

“In Hip Hop, a lot of the stuff you hear in the mainstream today is Trap-infused and to me doesn’t have the soulfulness and warmness – or even the grittiness – that the mid-90s had,” he said. “I kind of wanted to embody that as an echo back to that golden era. I also included some stuff to make it sound like it was brought up in the present times and some things that can take us into the future as well. In some cases, you might hear some weird synth sounds, some angelic voices in the background, or soundscapes with sparse percussion to create that futuristic sound that pairs well with the 90s era of Hip Hop.”

Mr. Buddy – Fonqwitus

Blog, Industry Spotlight, ME Blog, Music, Promo

Mr. Buddy perfectly captures essence of Funk with latest single ‘Fonqwitus

JACKSONVILLE, FL – In a world full of 808s and Trap beats, Mr. Buddy is bringing a different kind of swing. His music is something that can’t be labeled because it’s new age, but at the same time his funkalicious swag has a familiar flavor that is reminiscent of some of the greats like Heavy D or George Clinton.

That funky swag is showcased on his latest single “Fonqwitus” which is currently available across all streaming platforms. The song opens with a throwback kind of sound that soon introduces a funky beat that’s so catchy it practically oozes with joy. It’s impossible to listen to this song and not bounce and bop to the groove that Mr. Buddy creates. True to his name, this comedian-turned-musician puts a smile on the faces of anyone who listens to his latest track.

“I wanted to make a song that was big enough and good enough to get people to get up and dance and party and have a good time, especially with what we’re going through with the Corona Virus,” Mr. Buddy said. “It’s a song that allows you to have your own personal party at home. It’s not the cliché rapping-about-guns-or-girls-or-money kind of song. It’s just simply about having a good time. I wanted to make music that children who grew up like me could listen to with their parents. There’s no curse words or sexual innuendos, just good clean fun music that allows everyone to have a good time.”

Fonqwitus” is the perfect song to showcase the unique sound and style from this fast-rising artist from the south. Though it’s the first single he’s ever released publicly, it’s not the first music he’s created in his life. In fact, he’s always had a musical background dating back to his time in elementary school. The second oldest of five children, Mr. Buddy is part of a music-loving family. His father, who plays bass guitar, introduced him to music, while his mother sings and plays the flute. As he grew older, he began to learn as many different instruments as he could – from piano and drums to trumpet and more.

“My background is in Jazz, but my sound has an influence of the 70s, 80s and 90s and includes Funk, Disco, Big Band, Hip Hop, Classic, Alternative Rock, Neo-Soul, and even Country,” he said. “I love the thick chords and phat basslines that come with Funk music. The funkier the better. With an upbringing in the church and with giants like Will Smith as an example, I pride myself in creating fun, clean music that all people can enjoy.”

Kayla Clark – My World Of Loneliness

ME Blog, Music, Promo

Teenage singer/songwriter Kayla Clark offers introspective look at solitude with new single ‘My World of Loneliness’

PHOENIX, AZ – Kayla Clark is a fresh Indie singer/songwriter who seamlessly blurs the lines between most contemporary Pop sub-genres through her storytelling and remarkably catchy tracks. The Phoenix-based singer has recently released a new single called “My World of Loneliness” – a timely song that is already connecting with fans all over the world.

“Everyone at some point feels lonely, especially right now as we’re all having to be away from everyone,” Clark said. “I’m taking from the feelings of different experiences of loneliness and putting that all into one song. I usually put a lot of thought into my lyrics, and this one really stood out to me of all the other songs I’ve written. It also features a lot of piano which I think fits the tone of the song very well.”

Clark’s sound holds the unique characteristic of being as minimally edited as possible. She prefers her music to feel raw and unplugged, avoiding over production in favor of the more organic vibes that come from a truly free-spirited process. But that process also includes a dedication to making something as high quality as possible, which means she has dedicated a lot of time to writing and rewriting. Ultimately, to match her sound, Clark prefers to play listening rooms and more intimate venues, allowing her to connect with the audience on a more vulnerable and real level. But with 2020 forcing most artists to stay home and avoid the crowds that come from live performances, Clark has instead focused on her songwriting. As a result, she’s recorded a large collection of songs that perfectly narrate her life as a young woman and musical artist – all of which she plans to release over the course of the next coming months on her new EP, “My World of Loneliness,” set to drop in January.

Prior to the new EP, however, Clark said she plans to release another single called “Silhouette of Me” on Dec. 15. Taking a cue from “My World of Loneliness,” this new single will explore that moment late at night when it feels like all the rest of the world is asleep.

“It’s late and all the lights are going off in the city and you feel like you’re the only one awake,” Clark said of the song. “The only thing to keep you company in that moment is your shadow. It’s a song that features more of me on guitar, but at the end, it’s all about the lyrics. I just want people to hear my songs and be able to connect with them and have their own interpretation of the lyrics and apply it to their own lives. I think music is something that can bring us all together through different emotions and experiences of life, which is why I spend the most time on the lyrics. I’d rather write a song that actually means something than create a catchy tune. I will always want to connect in deeper ways.”

Kayla Clark’s music is currently available across all streaming platforms.

1260BC – 1260 AM

Blog, ME Blog, Music, Promo

New album from 1260BC shares unvarnished truth of the streets

ATLANTA, GA – A new artist from Atlanta, Georgia is bringing a style of Hip Hop to the table that is equal parts raw and respect. 1260BC is an up-and-coming rapper who is bringing his stories from the streets and sharing them with the world with unvarnished truth. In fact, it’s that realism that he most wants to be known for as an artist – something which shines bright on his latest single “1260 AM.”

“I hate rappers who say something and really don’t live it,” he said. “That’s why I really just want everybody to know I’m telling the truth. I live what I rap.”

1260BC said he respects rappers such as Kevin Gates and Nipsey Hussle for the energy they bring to their music and for the fact that they, too, tell the truth with their lyrics. But more than that, he said he’s always been impressed with how those legends have been able to connect with a wide audience.

“They tell you how it is and why it is and they’re straightforward,” he said. “They tell the truth, and that’s what I want to be known for when it comes to my music. I want people to know I don’t hold back. The things that Kevin Gates has been through, I’ve been through them, too. Back in 2013, I was still in the streets and going crazy. But when I saw him on Breakfast Club, my life changed.”

That moment served as a spark of inspiration for 1260BC who started moving away from baseball and toward music. He served for two-and-a-half years in the military and upon returning home started working with his brother on his unique sound and style as an artist. Over the past seven years, he’s been honing that sound while trying to break away from that street lifestyle that has so many consequences. For his latest single, he said he happened to get lucky with a local Atlanta producer who heard him rapping on the mic one day and offered to bring him a beat for the song.

“I was in the studio with one of my boys and when the producer walked in and heard us he said he had a beat that would be perfect for it,” 1260BC said. “He sent it to me the next day and we laid it down right away. It’s an upbeat track and when some people hear it they say it reminds them of 21 Savage. But I have my own sound that’s just different than anyone else.”

1260BC said he’s planning on continuing to drop singles over the next few months, leading up to a full album that he’d like to release in summer 2021.

Thomas Bernard – You

Soulful vocalist and singer/songwriter set to dropped emotional Pop Ballad ‘You’

ST. LOUIS, MO – Thomas Bernard is a young singer/songwriter from St. Louis whose new single “You” is set to make him break out big waysin the music industry. Driven by strong piano chords that serve as the perfect platform for Bernard’s soaring and heartfelt vocals, “You” is a Pop ballad that’s reminiscent of some of the greatest names in music today.Listeners of the song will immediately feel the emotion in his voice as he sings. And it’s that emotion that makes it a song that’s immediately accessible for a wide audience.

“I wrote it about the relationship I’m currently in,” Bernard said. “There was a time when my girlfriend felt like I didn’t consider her to be 100 percent the one for me. But I wanted to let her know that she was the only one in my eyes.”

Bernard said fans who listen to his music will certainly feel the influences of Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd. That said, he has his own unique sound and style that is definitely carving out a niche within the crowded music marketplace. His voice is tailormade for radio – to the point that he was a contestant on both American Idol and The Voice. He brings a little bit of an R&B soulful vibe to his music, and the lyrics he creates are genuine and filled with emotion.

“I try to make them as real and relatable as possible,” he said. “I just want to create music that people can feel rather than just hear. I feel like today’s generation is leaning toward music that just has a good beat in the back, but not everyone is really saying much with their lyrics. Only a select few artists today put out good stories, and that’s what I want to do. I want people to listen to my music and relate to it and really feel it rather than just listening to something that sounds nice in the moment.”

Bernard first came on the music scene at age 15 when he started going to his local recording studio in downtown St. Louis and creating new tracks. He spent many years honing his craft and writing songs that he knew would one day connect with people. Along the way, he has posted videos of himself singing on multiple social media platforms, building a strong fanbase that continues to grow every day.

“You” is dropped across all streaming platforms. Bernard said he has two more singles set to release in the coming months.

Intl Don – Stop F’king With Me

ME Blog, Music, Promo

Gangsta Trap Rap takes center stage with new single from Intl Don

LAS VEGAS, NV – Some real “Dirty South” Gangsta Trap Rap comes to the forefront with a new single from International Don. “Stop F’king With Me” is an aggressive, in-your-face slow jam that evokes memories of 90s Gangsta Rap and features Intl Don’s signature gravelly voice. Reminiscent of rappers like Jadakiss or Busta Rhymes, Intl Don brings a hardcore sound that’s equal parts bouncy and hype. The song will make you want to bop your head while getting pumped up for whatever comes next in your life.

“I’m from the South and I’ve got my own style, which I call Gangsta Pimp,” Intl Don said. “I’m kinda keeping that Memphis flow but with that Gangsta Pimp Trap vibe. I call my music a survival kit because it shows people in the struggle how to make it out. My music shows you how to live especially in the jungle like that. Only the strong survive where I’m from. You’ve gotta be tough. You’ve gotta be strong. That’s what my music is about.”

Intl Don’s signature style isn’t one-sided, however. In fact, his name is a precursor to his sound in that he has a very international flavor to the music he creates. As someone who has traveled all around the world, he’s taken influences from many different cultures. That’s why his music is already making waves in various parts of the world. In fact, one of the biggest markets to embrace his sound is the thriving Hip Hop audience from the United Kingdom. That’s quite a journey for someone who grew up on the streets of Memphis, Tennessee.

“I remember when I first started music as a kid that we’d all get together and stand around each other on the streets and just start rapping,” Intl Don said. “I was always the best rapper and I could just go off the head with it. I had a way with my flow and I was always the one with the most aggressive, deeper voice. Around 2010 is when I started getting serious with my music. And though I got sidetracked for a long time, I’m ready to go all the way with it. I came from the struggle and you can still hear that in my music, but I’ve also evolved as an artist and I think that’s what makes me a hit in other countries.”

Following the success of “Stop F’king With Me,” Intl Don said he plans to release another single called “Like I’m Cash” later this year. It’ll be another “Gangsta Pimp song,” he said, with a music video to follow before the end of the year.

Shalisa – It’s Too Late

Industry Spotlight, ME Blog, Music, Promo

Shalisa celebrates ‘Five Decades’ of music with beautiful new album

ORLANDO, FL – Shalisa James has been a professional vocalist, pianist and music director for more than 30 years. And as she approaches her 50th birthday, she’s preparing to launch an album that not only celebrates a life of music but which also shows other female artists that it’s never too late to live out their dreams.

After singing on five albums with her group Toxic Audio over the years, as well as singing on other artists’ albums and tackling thousands of studio projects, Shalisa decided she wanted her own album to celebrate turning 50. “Five Decades” is a 14-track project that showcases a variety of sounds and styles perfectly suited to display Shalisa’s beautiful vocals.

“I wanted to share that even at this age, I’m in the best voice of my life,” Shalisa said. “I chose music from all five decades of my life for mostly covers but with a twist. Another interesting thing about this album is that it was a pandemic project, providing income and collaborative opportunities for more than 20 musicians during the lockdown months of April through July. We worked totally remotely with many band members for tracks, never even meeting in person.”

Shalisa is no stranger to the recording process and entertainment industry. Her company, Entertainment Central, has produced music acts and shows at major attractions worldwide. She’s worked with Universal Studios and Warner Brothers to create the Frog Choir Show for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. She collaborated with the Tonight Show team and Universal to create the show for the Race Through New York with Jimmy Fallon attraction. And her video for the song she wrote with her husband, “Couldn’t Get a Sitter,” has seen more than a million views on its way to winning a Telly Award for Best Comedic Music Video. She’s also done work on Broadway with her lead vocal on the Broadway Concert version of “Hair” being nominated for a Grammy Award with her group Toxic Audio. Shalisa has also been named Female Vocalist of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2007 by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America. Her voice has been heard on more than 1,000 radio jingles across the U.S.

Now with her new album, Shalisa is ready to show the world a new twist on the music her fans have come to know and love from her for the past 50 years. A lot of the songs on the album have layered vocals because she loves harmonies, and many of the covers will feel familiar to listeners while also presenting a unique vibe that’s more modern. The last track on the album features all members of her family – her husband sings, her son plays guitar and beat-boxes, as well as plays guitar. Her younger son – who is a screenwriter and singer – contributes to the song. And her daughter – who at 26 is studying to become a doctor and fronts a Rock band at her med school – also added some vocals to the song.

With tracks that explore love and meaningful relationships in all its forms, Shalisa said “Five Decades” is a fun album for music lovers of all ages and demographics. But more than anything, she hopes the album will inspire other women out there to continue pursuing their dreams no matter what the challenges.

“I hear a lot of women talking about how they were so much better when they were younger and that they’re losing their range or their chops or they don’t have stamina,” Shalisa said. “That’s a narrative that women have heard a lot and buy into. I wanted to let people know and show them proof that you can still sing as well as you’ve ever sung in your life when you’re hitting 50. At this age, we’re getting better and better and working at our craft. My life experience comes through in the music, which adds layers that I wouldn’t have been able to bring at age 20. So I hope this album inspires others to see that they can be at their best if they stick with it and don’t buy into a negative narrative. The world likes to tell people they’re not as good as they were, and I, with this album, I wanted to say, ‘No! I’m actually singing better than I’ve ever sung.’”
