Cold Ca$e could be spending his life in prison. He and his family are making music instead

As Thomas Sipes describes it, he’s lived a “hellacious” life. It was only a few years ago that Sipes, better known as East Coast rapper Cold Ca$e, found himself staring down 99 years in prison. He faced a third felony charge in California, a state where a “third strike” can mean life behind bars.“During that whole time it was like a transition time for me,” says Sipes. “I was trying to mature as a person and a father and I was trying to get out of the whole hustle game, get out of selling drugs and get away from street life. I was just trying to get legal, start doing things right for my family and look out for my kids.”In the midst of his legal troubles, Sipes turned to writing music as a means to vent as he hoped he wouldn’t spend the rest of his life in prison. And he wasn’t just facing trouble in California; Sipes also had pending cases in Las Vegas and Pennsylvania. He managed to beat the case in California, took plea deals in others, and started to turn his life around after spending five years on parole. He’s now focusing on a burgeoning music career. His upcoming EP, titled “My Story,” looks back at a life spent in and out of jail as Sipes – and his family – continue their rise from the ashes. “I’ve been in prison, been raided by the DEA, had my kids taken away from me,” he says. “Finally I guess I had an epiphany, woke up and said this life isn’t for me anymore. I need to do something better.”Sipes, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was first and foremost a poet and writer. He’s worked as a magician and illusionist and says the performing arts are in his soul and blood. He knows his music will offend some but stresses he’s just writing about his own experiences and isn’t one of the “studio gangsters.”It’s become a family project, too. Along with his wife, “Mean $treak,” and their 10 and 12-year-old sons, known as “Baby Gangsta” and “$¢-money$,” the four artists form the first family of Irish descent rappers who are known collectively as “The IRA,” or Irish Rapping Americans. “It’s awesome because it gives us an opportunity to stay together as a family, to work with each other, to be together doing something legal,” Sipes says. He and his wife grew up in the 90s in the midst of the East Coast vs. West Coast rap era, something that influences each of their unique styles. The kids, meanwhile, grew up listening to artists like Eminem. Each of them writes their own music and family members often feature each other on their projects. In all, the family has released at least 20 songs in the last few years and My Story will feature some of their latest work. “99 Years” is an unreleased song written when Sipes was fighting the felony charge for growing marijuana in California. “My Story” is another unreleased track that will appear on the project. A third track from the EP is “Uncivilized,” which details Sipes’ time in and out of prison and other institutions that changed his life forever and left him feeling “uncivilized.”“Stacks” is another new song. It won’t be on the EP, but it covers Sipes’ time selling drugs in Pennsylvania and laundering money. “We could make some drug money, go buy a house for 10 thousand dollars and turn it into a trap house real quick or turn it into something else and flip it and make fifty, sixty thousand on top of that,” he says. Other releases by Sipes and family include “Swine,” on which Sipes expresses his distaste for corrupt police, and “Poverty,” about coming from nothing and having something as an adult. There’s also “Judgement Day,” which is about a snitch making controlled buys from Sipes that spawned his first police raid in Pittsburgh. “Some of the music may be offensive for some people, some people may feel it’s too violent and the music talks too much about crack, drugs, guns and street life,” Sipes says. “I know not everyone is going to relate to this type of stuff and these topics. But I know there are a lot of people out there who can relate to being locked up and dealing drugs for a living and being taken away from your family by law enforcement. I know that there’s going to be critics who say and act like we never sold crack or lived a life like that. But I’d say to those people I did my time in prison and I’ve got a rap sheet a mile long. Court records don’t lie. It’s all real. It happened. Instead of writing a biography – which I considered – I’m telling a story with my music. We as a family are telling our stories. We’re expressing ourselves through these lyrics, even our kids, who were ripped out of bed in the middle of the night by the DEA and taken away from their mom and dad. They have their own stories to tell. Now they’re telling their real life stories through music.”Sipes just wants people to give the music a listen, especially if they like “real gangster rap.” And don’t just listen to Cold Ca$e – listen to everybody in the family. As for the critics who might question allowing his kids to rap about such mature subjects, Sipes says the same things are widely available on television and online. “If we could keep them with us performing and talking about these types of subjects through music rather than actually trying to go out and live a life like that, I think it’s safer for them to express themselves through music rather than go out and live a life like we did and then have to go to jail or get locked up,” he says. “I would rather them express themselves through music and know that you’re telling a story, it’s like a movie. You’re telling a story about your past but you’re not really going out there killing people or shooting people. A lot of this is lyrically expressing ourselves. That’s the most important thing.”

Cain MacWhittish – Ouch

Blog, Industry Spotlight, Music, Videos

PORTLAND, OR – When you mix an alternative rock and gothic electronica background, you get Cain MacWhittish’s industrial electronic sound that the artist says encompasses all of his influences and experimentation together through his single “Ouch.”

“I usually tell people to listen to see what they come up with. Some kind of electronic music, that’s what I like to say. I generally try more to come from not a regular electronica background. I try to come more from indie and punk influences.”

Cain MacWhittish – who also goes by Cain WTF – grew up playing in the community orchestra as well as in school bands. After enlisting in the military for a few years, he moved to NYC in the early ‘90s and played drums in punk bands. He would attend shows of bands such as Jesus Lizard and Girls Against Boys, followed by dancing at venues amidst the ‘90s gothic club scene. MacWhittish made his way to the west coast – living in San Francisco for a majority of his life, until moving to Los Angeles and assisting former Thriller co-engineer Steve Bates, working with artists such as Courtney Love and Eric Clapton, while continually making his own music. He now resides in Portland, OR. where he continues to create his eclectic sound.

Cain’s music, which includes 148 releases on Bandcamp, comes from using various synth plug-ins through Ableton live, in a songwriting process that has a play by improvising. “Ouch” implements the artist’s industrial and goth electronic sound background. It’s the darkwave sound of his musical history, ebbing in and out of industrial and ambient sounding almost similar to Aphex Twin. MacWhittish describes “Ouch” as a big representation of his music.

“I feel like ‘Ouch’ really represents the sound I’m trying to create. With all this experimentation, I kind of have an idea of where I wanna go in my head. So ‘Ouch’ is the best installation of that so far.”

And while MacWhittish is a fan of house DJs, he prefers to make eclectic mixes that have gained listeners off of Mixcloud, reaching up to almost 13k plays. Since Covid, he has spent his time in downtown Portland’s Pioneer Square with a synthesizer set-up performing live sets and sets his interests on playing music festivals in the future, honing his DJ skills after attending Movement Music Festival in Detroit.

“The year I went, I was like ‘I should just up my DJ game’ so if I ever by some miracle got invited to play festivals like this, I’d be comfortable saying yes.”

HassanMelanated releases debut single of a solo career

ATLANTA, GA – HassanMelanated grew up surrounded by the energy and magic of the music industry and now he is taking the reins on his own career. Influenced by the work of his father, Hitman Sammy Sam, his uncle who produced music, it was no surprise that HassanMelanated took to music as well. Now, fully on his own, HassanMelanated is releasing his newest single “Black Sheep”.

HassanMelanated has been involved in the music industry for several years now, but has only just taken on the intensity of working fully alone. Without others, however, we are able to see a track that fully encapsulates who this artist is. “I wanted to be true to who I am,” he said. “When people are listening to the track I want them to be able to say ‘Okay, this is who Hassan is, before all of the extra things get added in.’”

Before taking on his solo career, HassanMelanated began his career in 2016 with a duo group. From there, his love for music led him to pursue a solo career as well as a solo move to Africa. Now, back in the states, he is ready to share his music with the world. “Black Sheep” is now his first release since coming home.

“Black Sheep” does a brilliant job of letting listeners get to know who they’re listening to. It tells a story of who inspired HassanMelanated and how he got to where he is today. “I talk about my family and a little bit about how I came up. I’ve named a couple of people who inspired me, that I grew up with, it’s really just my story.” he explained.

HassanMelanated created “Black Sheep” with the intention of sharing who he truly is as an artist, but there is more to the song than just that. “This song is about staying true to yourself and taking care of your mental and physical health,” he said. “It reminds you not to be influenced by the negative things that can pull you in.” To HassanMelanated, this means putting God first, and focusing on his music.

While the song does have a deeper focus, it is meant to do more than simply introduce you to HassanMelanated. “Black Sheep” also has a dance feel to it, allowing people to enjoy the vibe of the song as much as they can enjoy the lyricism. This song is a full package.

“Black Sheep” releases on October 1, and from there HassanMelanated has even more to come. Following the new song will be the music video to go along with it. From there, HassanMelanated’s fans can look forward to future music and the upcoming album that he has in the works.

It is obvious that HassanMelanated’s experiences have already given him a great deal of skill and knowledge to do great things in the music industry. With a drive to succeed and the confidence to take risks that many would shy away from, he is already doing great things with his music. HassanMelanated is sure to continue to climb his way up to become one of the greats of Hip Hop.

“My goal is to be the best artist I can be, to reach my full potential and take the risks that other people won’t. I want to be known as someone who isn’t afraid to do things.”

Be sure to keep an eye out for HassanMelanated and check out his music on all major streaming platforms. Also remember to check him out on social media and follow him to keep up with new releases and other exciting news about this incredible artist.

RichRel – SonShine

Blog, Industry Spotlight, ME Blog, Music

RichRel shares light and hope with energetic EP ‘SonShine’

LOS ANGELES, CA – An exploration of light and hope takes center stage on the new album from West Coast artist RichRel. With a sound reminiscent of Kanye West’s new vibes, RichRel’s “SonShine” offers fans of hip-hop a new style as he aims to inspire the world to look to the hope that comes with a new day.

“When I created this project I was in a very dark place, just like a lot of other people have been recently,” RichRel said. “The foundational thought that hit me is that the sun is gonna come up tomorrow, and there’s hope in that. We need to fight for that. So what you see throughout the project is an idea of light and hope.”

Released across all streaming platforms on Sept. 24, the project features six songs that RichRel said “are meant to be played as loud as possible.” This is not elevator music. In fact, RichRel said he’ll be surprised if this album isn’t cranked up by fans all over the U.S. and eventually in the international market. That buzz has already started thanks to the debut single that shares its name with the EP, “SonShine.” The song has a bit of a crossover vibe to it with a nice tight flow and lyrics that tell RichRel’s story and his determination not to fold in the face of adversity.

“When you’re in that place you could fold, but you become bold enough to say you’re gonna shine,” he said. “That’s what the song is about – the pain and the dark, but then the light provides a spark. This album is for the eclectic. It’s for the warriors of light. It’s not for passive people. Anyone who resonates with it will have that warrior spirit in them. We’re warring for good, for progress, and for positive energy. It’s motivational and anthemic. It’s calling out and calling to a charge to come out of this time we’re in. We need something like that right now.”

RichRel said he’s excited for a new fanbase to recognize his cross-generational and multi-cultural appeal as an artist. Originally from Chicago, this former D1 football star eventually decided to hang up his cleats in favor of a professional career as a recording artist. Along the way he also founded a nonprofit called Mission1Race that creates content, community experiences and unity-based curriculum that seeks to establish diverse collaborations to advocate for and bring together people of multiple background and demographics. The ultimate goal of the organization is to advocate for justice, radical forgiveness, human reconciliation and oneness.

“Whatever you got, we all can shine in our space and time,” he said,. “We don’t all have to be entertainers or doctors or whatever. Whatever your influence is, stay the course and shine and start seeing each other and respecting each other. Faith, gender, sexuality, race … none of that changes the value and respect that each human deserves. The ultimate undertone for me as an artist is to bring people together. I would be disappointed if my music didn’t represent that.”

Lost The Flame Finds a Home with Fans

HOUSTON – Troy Remedy has done it again. His latest single, “Lost the Flame,” blends one part hip-hop and one part Texas blues for a single that is destined to blaze the charts.

Joining the Texas native is Big Pokey, a Houston hip hop veteran and original member of the infamous Screwed Up Click.  Founded by the late and iconic DJ Screw whose sounds helped shape the Houston Hip hop scene.  With this single they’ve masterfully created “Lost the Flame,” which focuses on keeping the desire to keep going alive and those who’ve lost the flame and their own passion due to circumstances both in and out of their control.

“We’ve all given up at one point or another,” said Troy Remedy. “But to endure and keep pushing is key. And for those who’ve lost that passion or will we do this for them as well.”

Admitting that he has “fallen off track” a few times, Remedy says coming back stronger is important in one’s life and fulfilling what your passions and purposes are just as crucial.

“Don’t ever lose that fighting spirit,” he said.

The “Lost the Flame” video is now available on YouTube, while the single will drop later

this week. Remedy penned “Lost the Flame,” knowing that he wanted to provide something that struck a chord and was hard hitting, which has ignited with fans as the video has already been well received early on. The video was shot in Houston, with Big Pokey adding an impactful verse that blends so well with the beat.

“Big Pokey is a Houston legend,” said Remedy. “I was fortunate to have him jump on board. He adds that extra key ingredient to drive the message home.”

The video features scenes that offer an in depth look into the meaning behind the verses and chorus and includes fiery camera angles representing the need to keep the fire inside burning and your drive alive. Fans of good music with a powerful message can look forward to adding this to the vault in their collection.

“Flames burn out the system then it’s pitch dark”

“You only feeling existence when you had the spark.”

Carson Key – Break ups

Blog, Industry Spotlight, ME Blog, Music, Videos

Carson Key parleys early success into push for international stardom

RICHMOND, VA – Carson Key is a name you need to have on your radar.

Prior to the COVID pandemic, this young artist from the East Coast was creating quite a buzz among the music industry. His song “Neverland” – a kind of remix of Ruth B’s “Lost Boy” – has seen nearly 15 million views on YouTube. He’s caught the attention of mega-artists Soulja Boy and Ramsey The Great – even collaborating with them on a song. He’s had meetings with major A&Rs and labels, and is primed to become one of the music industry’s hottest new international artists.

Fans who don’t know him can check out his latest hit single, “Break Ups,” across all streaming platforms. Inspired by a tragic experience between he and an ex-girlfriend, the song showcases his melodic style and raw talent as a rapper and all-around artist. As soon as listeners hear his unique sound and style, they’ll know why so many A&Rs have said that he’s difficult describe in the best of ways. He’s diverse, and his ability to weave words around any beat or instrumental is second-to-none.

“I’ll do a song like ‘Break Ups’ – which is more melodic than anything else – and then do a song like ‘Barkin’ – which is about to come out and is more Trap and upbeat – and people will see how my style is so unlike anything else out there,” Key said. “When I’m in the studio, I’m just writing how I feel in the moment. I don’t have a set genre. I just want listeners to be able to take the lyrics and apply to them any situation in their own lives.”

Key said he first got started with music when he was 14 years old. At the time, his older sister passed away and he dealt with a lot of PTSD from the traumatic experience. He started writing as a method to cope with those overwhelming feelings. Eventually he started putting his lyrics online, and people gave him some great feedback. By age 16 he was recording, and he hasn’t looked back since. Now at age 24 he’s trying to parley his early success into more of an international presence. He’s taking his songs like “Food For Thought” – which features Soulja Boy – and “Neverland” and using them to build momentum for a push into even larger audiences.

Following “Break Ups,” Key said he plans to drop an album called “Colder Than December.” Exploring the come-up and the challenges he and his team have had to overcome to get to where they are, the project will serve as the perfect winter mix. He said the first single from that project, also called “December,” should release in mid-to-late November ahead of the full album.

Yasmina – Moon

Blog, Industry Spotlight, ME Blog, Music, Promo, Videos

Finnish singer pairs ethereal vibes with vulnerable lyrics on new single ‘Moon’

VAASA, FINLAND – In Greek mythology, Selene is the goddess of the Moon. As the tale goes, she drives her moon chariot across the heavens and was worshiped as the all-seeing eye of the night because the moon would always be visible in the night sky and no one could run from it. She shone bright with her magnificent silver light, which is an apt analogy for the way Yasmina Limam’s music is drawing attention from all over the world.

Hailing from a small hamlet in Finland, this ethereal vocalist with an electro-pop edge is bringing a very modern yet progressive sound to the global stage. Her new EP, “Moon,” which is slated to release later this year, embraces the symbology of the goddess Selene and serves as a platform for the kind of inspirational music this talented young artist wants to offer to the world.

“I want my music to be known for being authentically who I want to be and what I want to present myself as,” she said. “I never want to change my music for others. It’s coming straight out of me and I want people to notice that and hear that from my songs. One of the biggest things I would want to be known for is being vulnerable, and I want to bring that out in other people, as well.”

Yasmina has already released the first single from this forthcoming project, called “Mornings,” to high praise from industry insiders and fans alike. And now she’s following that up with the second single from the EP, which shares the name of the project “Moon.” The ethereal EDM vibe serves as the foundation for her spiritual journey, and the lyrics give audiences an inside peek into who she is as a woman and a person.

“I was reading about Selene and how powerful her feminine energy is,” Yasmina said. “I loved her story and wanted to use that in the song. I just started writing from the heart, and next thing I know it was there. It’s pretty poetic, and there are a lot of hidden messages behind the lyrics. I consider myself a pretty spiritual person and I like to use a lot of spirituality in my songs. I like to use a lot of deeper messages and bring out that spiritual view of things, while also offering healing and sharing with others the vibe it brings to me when I sing it.”

“Moon” is currently available to stream on all major platforms.

MrMuLa – Off Da Flo

Blog, Industry Spotlight, ME Blog, Music

MrMula is all about focusing on yourself with new single ‘Numbers’ (feat. Icewear Vezzo)

LOS ANGELES, CA – Growing up facing a variety of obstacles, it was music that brought MrMula to where he is today. Through his love for a vast collection of genres and artists and his own interest in performing, he has worked his way up to releasing tracks and sharing his abilities and views with the rest of the world. Most recently, MrMula has put out the first of two collaborations with fellow Rapper, Icewear Vezzo.

The first release that MrMula put out with Vezzo is a track called “Numbers”. The song came together when MrMula reached out to Vezzo about working together while both were in LA. Casual interest turned to full-on friendship as the two recorded multiple tracks together. This track is a statement to Bio-Mula’s community, focusing on his second chance at life.

“I recorded this song a couple of weeks after I was released from what was a total of eight years of incarceration. It’s really a statement to the community and everyone who’s listening. You can have a second chance at life, so go take advantage of it.” Now that MrMula is back in his community, he is taking every chance he can get to do the things he loves.

To go alongside the track, “Numbers” features a video. The visual provides an interesting and well-matched addition to an already bold track. “We hit up a bunch of the nice spots in Hollywood and downtown LA and really I was just showing (Vezzo) around.” While the two were able to enjoy their location, they put together a brilliant addition to their latest release.

MrMula wants this track to be about being yourself and doing the things that make you happy. “Don’t worry about what other people think, just focus on you and the things you love to do. That’s what I’m doing from here on out. I’m doing numbers, why they mad at me?”

Having grown up facing a collection of difficulties and using music to save himself from what could have been a truly self-destructive path, it is amazing to see where MrMula has come from. He has already done so much as an artist, with more already in the works. There is no doubt that MrMula is on his way up.

To go alongside the two tracks that he is releasing with Icewear Vezzo, MrMula is already working on his debut album, a project called Risk It All Just To Ball. This project, set to release around the end of the year, will be teased with a new release every month. He is also excited for the second release of “OFF Da FLOW” with Vezzo as well as a music video to pair with it.

Be sure to check out Bio-Mula’s music on all streaming platforms and keep up with him on social media for more information about upcoming projects and releases. Links to all of these things can be found listed below.

3Fifs – Season of the Fall

Blog, Industry Spotlight, ME Blog, Music, Promo, Videos

History buff uses pain of the past to illuminate ills of the future with lyrical new vibe on fresh single

PALM BEACH, FL – Many people unfamiliar with the foundation of the United States of America don’t realize that part of the provision of the original Constitution was to marginalize slaves and people of color by only considering them to be equal to three-fifths of a person. It’s a fact of American history that still echoes strongly in today’s culture and society, and as such it’s one of many facets upon which fast-rising Florida-based artist 3Fifs draws through his music.

The socially conscious rapper brings a burst of energy and entertainment with his catchy grooves and infectious beats. Using the lessons of the past as foundation for challenging and through-provoking lyrics, 3Fifs has been turning heads for the better part of the past decade with his impressive blend of entertaining vibes. Drawing comparisons to legends such as Ludacris and Kurupt, 3Fifs has circled the edges of notoriety since he first burst onto the scene in 2013. That year, the St. Louis born artist was nominated “Freshman of the Year” at the SLUMFEST Awards. A year later, he was one of 14 Us-born artists to perform at Canadian Music Week, and in 2016, he won a songwriters award for his hit single “Blind the Sun.” Since reemerging on the scene in July with a featured verse on the local hit “Do You Wanna,” Fifs’ talents caught the eye of Florida legend Trick Daddy.

Today, this young hip-hop artist is bringing his unique sound and style to the table with a string of new singles that are creating quite a buzz among a wide variety of audiences. His latest single, “Season of the Fall,” is currently available on all streaming platforms and shares a message of love and loss and betrayal at the deepest level.

“The whole message of the song is about how sometimes the ones closest to you are the ones who end up stabbing you in the back,” 3Fifs said. “It’s repeating a view of what I’ve seen over the past few years with relationships with people I thought were good friends and kind of the culmination of all that. It was inspired by my cousin who got killed earlier this year by his girlfriend. He and I came into this music thing together and we grew up like brothers. I took a break from music for a while because I ended up getting married and was really focused on trying to take care of my wife and family through the more conventional route. But when he got killed it’s what prompted me to pursue music again. It’s time to make this happen.”

3Fifs said he hopes people will come to recognize him as an artist who is always real and who relates with others through a wide variety of shared experiences. He said he considers himself to be an everyday guy to whom people can relate, and he wants his music to give people hope and motivation.
